How do I get a branded reader?

To get a branded RSS reader, send an email to info@tristana.org and provide us with the required branding options below in the formats specified. You may also choose from the list of optional branding options and send us those creative elements as well. Once payment is confirmed, we will then send you an .exe file to post to your website or distribute to your customers, usually within 5 or 10 business days.

I. Required branding

  1. Name of your reader to appear on the user's Windows desktop, throughout the reader application,  installation screens, and Windows icon e.g. "ABC Reader". Note that if only 12 to 15 characters is ideal since more will be cut-off on Windows desktop label.
  2. Short-cut icon to appear on desktops when program is loaded - 32x32 pixel .ico icon file.
  3. An .opml file which contains folders/RSS/Atom feeds that you want preloaded into your reader. If you provide us a full URL to your opml file to preload, then you can change your subscriber folders or feeds at any time ("File / Export Channels" in Tristana Reader will produce an .opml file for export and posting to your server). You can use your free copy of Tristana Writer  (www.tristana.org/writer.cfm) which is included with a branded reader to create and publish RSS or Atom feeds to your server.
  4. You can set the default Topic Panel URL home page for the mini-browser to a URL of your choice (e.g. http://www.abccompany.com).
  5. Customized background image of new content alert pop-up window (305x170 pixel bmp, the reader adds the close "x" in top right corner and title "X channel(s) updated"), a .wav file chime (sound) when alert displays and duration of alert pop-up (default is 20 seconds).

II. Optional branding

  1. Top and bottom banners of main display: HTML header or footer can be  up to 90 pixels high and any width. It is recommended that your header image graphic(s) or HTML script include fully referenced URLs  (ie. www.yoursite.com/header.html) in order to allow you to make updates from your server in the future. You may also want to provide a header image graphic to display if user is offline. To have your header/footer open a link in the Topic Panel (bottom right) of the reader, use "link://http://www.someurl.com".
  2. Visual theme/skin default can be reset to any of the available options - see menu: "Preferences / Visual Theme" in the reader.  You may also provide the user the ability to reset the theme, or hard code a given theme provided.
  3. Javascript can be enabled as the default. Typically, javascript is disabled in the mini-browser as a default in order to block pop-up ads, as requested by user feedback. However, if you wish to enable javascript in the Topic Panel (mini-browser), we can set that as a default.
  4. You may wish to start media downloads automatically upon installation/open of reader and display the "Downloads" panel.  This can useful for podcasting audio files such as mp3s etc..
  5. You can customize pull-down menu URLs with your own URLs if desired, bearing in mind that many find our FAQs and user forums very helpful for questions/answers:
    About: http://www.erssbuilder.com/tristana/about
    Help: http://www.erssbuilder.com/tristana/help
    Help Forum: http://www.erssbuilder.com/tristana/forum
    Create Feed: http://www.erssbuilder.com/tristana/writer.cfm
  6. Preload search keywords so that preloaded feeds will automatically be scanned for results.
  7. If you code a feed link as "reader:http://www.yoursite.com/yourfeed.xml" on your website, and a user left-clicks that feed, it will be automatically added to your reader once confirmed. Note, however, that if a user right clicks in Internet Explorer with links set up this way to "Add Feed to ABC Reader", they will get an error, since "reader:" will be at the start of the URL (you can't use both options with the same link).
  8. We can add your License Agreement (rtf document) which the end user must agree to prior to installation of your branded reader.
  9. Our feed search box uses www.syndic8.com (currently the largest RSS search function), however, we can change that search function if we are provided with a URL with the $search$ term embedded in it, which searches an online database of your choice.
  10. You may preset the default Preference "Automatically delete topics after X days" to a new value, currently it is set at 30 days.
  11. You can have the reader request Country, state, city and zip/postal code information upon install, and have our reader append these variables to your opml file so that you can customize all feeds to your user's local geographic area (e.g. http://your.opml?country=USA-NY&city=New%20York&zip=1234). *Addional Cost
  12. During installation, we can require a username/email and password to authenticate each user for accessing secure feeds. *Additional Cost
